Of course, being a novella I have to voice my usual complaints - but not for my usual reasons. Usually I complain because novellas don't give you enough time with your favorite characters. This time, I'm complaining because I feel this story would be been better if the author had had more time to flesh everything out. Instead of a steady paced story where two characters overcome an obstacle on their way to love, it seemed as though this story moved at a breakneck speed and never gave the reader a time to really connect to what was going on.

These characters were interesting - I especially enjoyed the love/hate friendship between Nick and Eleanor. Their fencing scenes were some of my favorite, but again I wish there had been more of a chance to get a deeper connection with them. It comes out that Nick has always been in love with her, but we don't really get a sense of that from the book.

Lastly, the abrupt ending left much to be desired. I found myself going back to see if I hadn't accidentally skipped ahead without meaning to. I would have loved for there to have been an epilogue so that we could see what the future was like for these two considering how rushed everything else felt.

Overall, for a free book its worth it if you're looking just for something to pass the time.

Ruined by a Rake An All Fair in Love Novella edition by Erin Knightley Romance eBooks Reviews

Eleanor Abbington's first meeting with her new step-cousin Nicholas had him steal a kiss from her, a boy who's two years younger than she. Over the years, they've engaged in verbal and fencing battles, the latter's victory reward being a kiss. Eleanor, now at age 24, holds marriage in contempt due to her mother's unhappy marriage. However, her uncle is forcing her to wed his political associates to further his own bills, and she's resigned to that fate. It took Nicholas, who had just come back from the army as a commissioned officer, to help her gain back her determination and fighting spirit, as they tried to thwart her uncle's intentions.

This is an adorable tale of two bickering friends who, as adults, came to see each other as something more. Nicholas had harbored a crush on Eleanor for years, and it was nice to see him act the dependable man despite his young age. What love he didn't find with his stepfather he found with Eleanor, who came to see him as not a boy, but a man, a man she had grown to love.

The ending is a bit abrupt, and I would have liked a more satisfying retribution to the devious uncle, but given its length that's understandable. All in all, this is a quick and delightful read with two wonderful characters (I especially like the opening scene, how cute little Nicholas was in stealing a kiss).

There are also teasers in the back to Erin Knightley's Sealed With a Kiss novels, including the upcoming Flirting With Fortune.
I purchased this book based on the reviews and it didn't disappoint. It was charming and engaging, well drawn characters, some lovely, fun moments and I really got drawn into the chemistry between the two lead characters. They had strong viewpoints, clear personalities and motivations and the supporting characters, while somewhat less finely drawn, were strong considering the shortness of the story. I hate reviews that provide a synopsis of the story, but suffice to say this is in the Amanda Quick/Julia Quinn level of storytelling. I actually re-read bits as I was reading it just to prolong the story and I really, thoroughly enjoyed it.

There were a couple very minor bobbles here and there. A couple typos and I thought the ending got wrapped up a tiny bit too quickly, but not unsatisfactorily.

Definitely worth the $0.99 and I will definitely be looking forward for the next installation by this author. Definitely a huge amount of promise!
I loved this little story! Eleanor and Nicholas are introduced when they are children and Eleanor's uncle is marrying Nicholas's mother. Nicholas stole a kiss from her and embarrassed her in front of everyone, and from that day forward he was a thorn in her side. Fast-forward 15 years when Eleanor is about to be forced into a marriage she doesn't want and Nicholas comes home from the army after two years away. You can imagine what happens. Yes, it's somewhat predictable, but it's very sweet.

I loved Eleanor and Nicholas. My favorite type of heroine is one that is tough, spunky, and witty without being mean, and Eleanor was great...especially considering how short this novella is and how tough it must be to properly develop characters in very few words. I love that Nicholas has loved Eleanor since they were children, and I loved his reason for pestering her. I also love that he loves Eleanor's fire and that he pushes her to stand up to her uncle.

The main reason I stopped short of five stars for this review is the grammatical errors and obvious editing issues. It started out as just a dropped letter here and there (i.e., you instead of your) or a misplaced comma, but by the end there were really big errors that made it seem like the author really didn't understand the usage of certain words. For example, she used wane instead of wan, thing instead of think, and breath instead of breathe. It got sloppier as the story progressed. But this was a great price of free on from , so I'm not really complaining.

The story was full of great quotes and one-liners, especially the banter between Nicholas and Eleanor, and Nicholas and the mean uncle. I have to mention two of my favorite lines from the story. Eleanor says, "I am not scandalous, thank you very much...But stubborn and willful? A woman never argues with a compliment." And later, "If you are mad enough to marry me, my love, then I am likewise inclined."

I very much recommend this novella as a quick, sweet story, and plan to find more to read by Erin Knightley. Four and a half stars from me.
It was a cute story, very chaste, the couple only exchange a few kisses. I liked the characters, wish they had spoken to each other more. Also wish there was a real ending, maybe an epilogue. Seems like the author just wanted to end it, so she did. I enjoyed reading it, but no real payoff.
