Violet Claire Francesca Lia Block Books

The brevity bothered me a bit, and a bit of the predictability, but it was engaging in the difference of the way it was written. Based on two girls, the first section is written by Violet, in first person, but with camera cues. The second section is written by Claire, in the form of a journal, again in first person, while the story concludes with a third-person look at Violet & Claire. It explores friendship, ambitions, attaining dreams and falling from them and relationships, though I suppose I would have wished a bit more development. Claire's fascination with the faerie and how she relates to them (ostracized from the developing human world) is a nice touch of fantasy and ethereal thinking, whereas Violet sees the world as a story.

Violet Claire Francesca Lia Block Books Reviews

Violet dreams of writing and directing films one day. Then, she meets Claire, a fantastical girl who wears a Tinker Bell t-shirt and tapes fairy wings to her back. Claire loves writing poetry. Together, Violet and Claire decide to make a film that will show the audience the magical world that they believe in can exist. However, when Violet finds fame through a shocking way with the help of a mentor and Claire begins a relationship with a poetry instructor, the girls are driven away from each other. Will the power of love be strong enough to bring Violet and Claire together again?

Because this was the first book I have read by Francesca Lia Block, I had no idea what to expect. I found myself enthralled in a story that takes place in an enchanted world of its own. As I later learned, Block is known for her use of magical realism, which she certainly excels at. I particularly liked the magical realism in Violet and Claire because it gave the novel a fitting movie-like feel. Block's ability to make the readers question certain events, without making them frustrated, was also good. Throughout the novel, I was not sure the exact details of things, but for once, I was not actually annoyed by this. In fact I kind of liked it. This will also make readers want to reread the novel.

Unfortunately, Violet and Claire had some flaws that can not be forgotten. Towards the end, the novel felt rushed. At only ~176 pages, this really hurt the novel. However, the ending was not just rushed, it was unsatisfying. I felt that Block had the potential to make the book a lot better than it was, but for whatever reason, the potential never came out. Of course, I could be wrong because I have never read her other novels, but seeing as she's been around for years, I'm sure she can do better.

Violet and Claire is a decent choice if you are looking an unique novel.
... I didn't. Literally. I found a hardback copy of this book - sans cover - at a used bookshop. I was drawn to the purple binding, small size (I'm soooo tired of long books!), and the font for the title. I flipped through and read a few sentences, and they were so poetic and lyrical, it drew me in. Had I seen the cover, I probably wouldn't have even bothered.

I'm glad I did, because I *LOVE* this book. I love its message of friendship, of being whoever you are, of finding yourself, of falling in and out of love, of all the angst of being a teenager. I love the language, the pacing, the story...

The book is in three sections. First, from the first person point of view of Violet, an aspiring filmmaker who thinks her life is so boring. Second, from Claire's first person point of view. She wears fairy wings to school and feels very alone. The third section alternates between them in third person, culminating in a perfect and lovely ending.

I had never heard of this author (apparently I've been living under a rock), and was not surprised to read in her bio that she's the child of a poet and painter. It's obvious in her work, in the way she paints pictures with words. I will definitely be getting more of her books!
Love this author. Haven't read anything by her I haven't loved.
This a wonderful story about two girls who become close friends but their friendship becomes strained under the stress of each girl chasing her dreams. They go off on their own paths and each girl is challenged by the hardships caused from their choices.

It is very well written and really leaves you wanting to know what happens next. I would definitely recommend it.
I love weetziebat, but this is written more for teens than adults. Perhaps everyone but me already knows that! For the right age group, it is a great book!
